Setting Convergence
« on: December 12, 2008, 05:20:44 PM »
How did real WWII ground crews set the convergence of the guns?  Was it all done with math, or did they test fire and adjust that way?

test fired and adjusted as well...

Test fired on targets.  Even bomber crews would do they same to make sure the guns were aimed correctly.

As much as it pains me to say it, the movie "Pearl Harbor" has a good scene in which it shows the ground crews adjusting the convergence for those P40 fighters.

Probarbly the ONLY correct thing in that film!

Are the guns simply adjusted with screw adjustments?  Or is it much more complicated than that?

There's definitely rubber mallets and swearing involved.

It looked like they had the propellers turning the right direction too.

At least they had propellers.  That was accurate.  Ben Affleck was an annoying twerp...that was pretty accurate, too.

I've got a dozen pics of them hauling up the rear of aircraft on the range where they set convergence to get "flight attitude".  My dad did his  (bomber guns) with a wrench, some creative linguistics, a hammer, a little blood, and a target range.
