Queston on field layouts...
« on: September 06, 2001, 08:11:00 AM »
Currently in the MA we see 3 basic air fields, 1 type of port, and 1 type of V base.
That means that with 6 maps, we have all the intel we need to coordinate a base attack.

My question is: If the MA had several different field designs (lets say 15 for now) and each base had different ack, fuel bunker, (etc.) locations, would it make the game to difficult?

What would be cool to see in a future update, would be some sort of system with different field arrangements and the need to do a recon flight before you could get a map of the field for bombing. Maybe require plane to select guncam in load out, fly within certain range of field activate camera and survive to a friendly field.
Not a very high priority for upgrades but imo it would be cool

of course then apathy the code would need a random field generator at each reset.

I think many different field layouts would be nice.  It would also be nice to see more accurate buildings..  Thats a real small barracks...
BUT I see we are getting small towns in 1.08.. +Q

Yeah recon is definately what id like to see, a use for all them crappy planes like the lysander!!!!  lol

But would every player have to go take a picture for themselves?  Would be hard to set up a mission in the MA if noone has a pic of the field yet, theyd be going in blind.  Or would the same photo be used for everyone?

It does make it kind of easy to take a fighter over a small base and de-ack it at the moment because you know where everything is.

Dont the fields in the combat arena have like different layouts?  They looks really cool anyway.

Does this affect the terrain download?  or are the fields added in by the aces program, or are the fields stored in that download?

Anyway im all for this new fields and recon!  :D

Recon:  My thought is that 15 different fields (will clearify below) multiplied by say 3 different bunker layouts, would give us 45 different paterns to deal with.
This should present more of a recon effect than current.

Download (file size):  I've been dinking around with the Terrain Editor and I think I will try an experiment to see if it will change the size. Since Norway is only 200kb larger than Mindinao, I would bet it will be less than 200kb for 40 fields.  ...more on that later.

Different field types
What I mean by different "TYPE" is this:  Right now we have VB, small AF, med. AF, Large AF, Port, and CVs.  Of which, all small AF's have the same hangar arrangement, all Large are the same, and so on.
Now, if you had 2 different hangar arrangements for each AF (Air Field), then you would have 6 basic AF types. Do the same with the VB and Ports and you get 10.  Add 1 different fleet pattern and you have 12.

Now, take the AF, VB, and Ports and give each of them 2 distinctly different bunker/ack/tower/radar/etc. layouts and you have 20 field maps to deal with.

I think the key is to keep the number of objects at each field type.

This should increase recon difficulty to give us seasoned dweebs more of a challenge, and not present to much difficulty for the newbie.

I've made 6-7 new fields with the editor, until HiTech changes the code to make them landable <no ditch on runway> and adds a stand alone refuel pad they can't be used in the game.

The CM group sent a wishlist to HTC with this on it but I don't know if it will make it into 1.08, when it does there's no reason why you couldn't make every field unique.

My thought on recon photos was this:
Once you land with the photos of each base then I would think the simplest way would be to have drop down maps of recon'd fields available for all who take off after the recon plane has landed at a friendly field.
Or you could figure some sort of time frame where the photo's become available immediately at the field you land at and become available at nearer fields first then spreading out (after all they didn't have fax machines in WW2) while more realistic this second option seems more complicated than necessary

Well for recon...  Why not make any factories and cities visited by a recon ship visible on the map for all friendlies.

On the map do not indicate exact field locations, just show a field is in 8,13 sector for example until visited by recon.

Perks: award successful recon missions (only the first) decent points to be applied anywhere!!  restrict which planes can fly recon and loadouts

Or possibly the clipboard map not showing the locations of enemy fields, factories until a recon mission (selectable loadout, camera vs ordinance) over the area successfully rtb's. You would know where the front lines are, but until some intel is gathered and returned, you wouldn't have precise knowledge of enemy resources.

Weather could play a part in this. An area socked in by a storm front would be difficult to recon.
