mirrors?
« on: December 26, 2008, 02:08:49 AM »
Dont know if it can be done and Im sure its been asked for, but rearview mirrors would be nice especially on birds like the hellcat.

Has been asked for, quite a few times... but I'll reply anywho...
I personally am all for the idea, but the argument made by HT is that it would be a coding nightmare and would cause exceptional ammounts of lag.
The argument from players is, by the time you can see 'em in your mirrors... it's too late...

the back hat switch combined with any programmable second view is not enough?

If you have a plane in this mirror you've already messed up.

How about a custom sound:  "There's a con somewhere on your six, somewhere between 6k and 100yd...you might need to turn a little to one side or the other." It could be a soothing female voice as to not add to the stress of you finding out that your SA sux.

Going a step further on the coding issues, how do you handle aircraft with multiple mirrors? I know for certain the F4Us had three: One centered above and another on each side of the canopy frame.

As far as usefulness, have we heard from anyone who's actually used mirrors on a real aircraft? Personal experience by someone on the boards, or a written account by an actual pilot?. Everyone against mirrors because they wouldn't be useful seems to operate on the assumption that the view would be too restricted, however if you consider the mirror on your average car there's actually quite a wide field of view considering the size of the mirror. Granted there's a window back there and not a solid bulkhead as in many of our aircraft, but would the view REALLY be as tight as seems to be getting implied?

Anecdotal...read that a lot of the mirrors were next to useless due to vibrations.

Ok, but what about someone with personal experience? The problem with anecdotal IS that it's anecdotal, no matter how reliable the source.

Here...yet again is why we don't need mirrors in AHII.

One, it is a huge additional graphics load. Two, because of the views available in AHII, it is a huge additional graphics load that would be absolutely superfluous.

Here are two shots of rearviews out of the FM2 in two different sims, another airplane with bad rearward visibility. One is from "Il2" with the stupid rearview mirror turned on, the other is from AHII.

The rearview mirror doesn't show you *anything* you can't already see with AHII's dead six view.

Keep in mind that some aircraft's views are much worse than the F4F/FM-2 and that you CAN'T move the view clear of the bulkheads.

Considering that experienced players wouldn't rely on them for more than a quick peripheral check, it'd just make sneaking up on squeakers--who would undoubtably forget to actually look around--easier. Oh the WHINES that will commence on 200 if you pop someone and he never saw you in his magic mirror. :D

IIRC it was Rall or Galland who originally said something to the effect of 'if you can see the enemy in your mirror, it's already too late' or what ever it was.

A Spitfire pilot commented that when a Bf109 was in range to fire it's wingspan in the mirror was about the same width as a "-" symbol in a newspaper.  He said they were useless.

It's not a *huge* additional graphics load, but there would be some.

Actually, that rear-view mirror would be very nice when look ahead at the person your gunning.  The movement in the mirror would catch your attention, at what point you'd look behind you and act accordingly.  Even if they did vibrate, it's not like they are there so you can read their call-signs, just so you know something is behind you, and it might have guns.

I'm neutral on this one, if it's added, cool, if not, not too worried.
