Closterman and
FAFL ALSACE in action at Cherbourg.
On a mission with Typhoons to sink the German ship
Munsterland. Closterman's Spitfire lost its oil in an HO with a 190 (that was nearly a collision). He landed with 0 oil pressure and an engine ready to burst into flames. His windscreen was obscured by oil (sound familiar?) and he had to jettison his hood and open the canopy to land. His wingman was credited with a kill on a 190---the
Munsterland was damaged and sunk a few days later by a
Bristol Beaufighter strike at Dieppe.
