I pre-bought Left 4 Dead, I'm still playing it today. Even if the story is short, it doesn't get old. Expert campaigns are viciously addictive (I haven't been able to finish one yet but I suck). Versus mode can be fun but lots of people take it too seriously imo.

Am I correct in that if you buy them from Steam that you have to have Steam installed and play them through their front end, yuuuucckk

That's what I thought at first.  But in actual use it's been pretty reasonable and non-intrusive.  It doesn't seem to have installed anything that runs in the background all the time, and the only drawback is that when launching a game I have to wait just a bit while it fires up the steam front end and checks for updates (which is sort of nice actually since I don't have to manually check for updates to all the games managed by Steam).  And I think that the startup process can be streamlined by de-selecting some startup options.

It's certainly less irritating and less buggy than the old iENT game manager thingy we all had to put up with for a while.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Game of the year for me... Not bored one bit with it after 40+ hours of play. Enjoy.

Second that.  I had a STEAM account for 5 years and did not have any major problems.  Right now I feel safer with STEAM account than  having a bunch of CDs laying around and collecting dust.

I've been loving up Left 4 Dead since Christmas as well.  Other than servers that like to crash and some loading bugs, its awesome.  No need for instense story lines when are you wanna do is kill hundreds of zombies.
