Recommend a cpu upgrade
« on: January 06, 2009, 09:18:42 PM »
Hope I'm not breaking any rules by doing this..

Current setup:
ASUS sli board (cant recall the name, A2M-SLI or something), AM2/AM2+ socket
XFX 9800 GTX+
AMD 64 3500+
4GB DDR2 800
Running XP pro..

What would be the best cpu upgrade for 100-125$?

Thanks.

Just upgrade? Do you mean for the current system changing only cpu?

Correct that is a Socket 939.   That in fact is what I "went from" to my current E8400 (I had a 3500+).

http://www.pricewatch.com/cpu/socket_939-2.htm

You can get a 4000+ (2.4ghz) or a Opteron (2ghz) for $104-105.

IMHO, save for a new mobo/cpu combo, you can easily reuse your ram and video card.

Sorry for the mixup guys, but the motherboard is an AM2 socket and so is the current CPU.. 3600+ not 3500+. It's a dual core.

I have to figure out another problem before I get to this though.

This should do the trick and it's cheap. Let me caution you though. You should read skuzzy's post about AMD duo cores first. You will probably have to do some tweaking. You may get spinning clipboards etc.

However, I had one of these and it is impressive. The bad thing was I would get booted about every 3 days. Skuzzy said it was my version of windows xp. It was a school version. Still though this is very cheap and it will do the job.

Good luck!

I honestly cannot believe how cheap that is. I'm almost tempted to build another computer using that cpu.
