Modem and dial up ISP rec

Unless wi-power serves my new area (which I doubt), I'll have to set up for dial-up.
Can anyone recommend a modem, and a provider?

Before resorting to dial up, go to "Dish Network" and see if their satellite internet service will serve you.

I thought satellite internet was terrible for gaming?  Speed of light thing; i.e. the round trip radio signal travel time from Earth to the geostationary satellite gives a huge latency delay.

Dialup works just fine as AH is not really transmitting much data.  (Presuming, of course, that the ISP gives you low latency.)

Satellite internet is the worst you can get for online gaming. Besides stability problems, the latency is a major issue.

We have a squaddie with Direct TV satellite connectivity. He can fly, and does manage OK... but his warps are "awesome" to behold. I would definitely NOT use it unless I had NO other option.

jimsom, flip open your local phone book and look up ISP's you might be surprised at how many are listed. Dial-up isn't that bad especially for gaming like AH. The packet sizes aren't that big, its just important that they keep coming     Before I got cable, the dial-up ISPs in my area would let you test run a few days to see how it worked for you. Back then we had issues with busy signals, and you never knew till you tried it for a few days if your timing was good. Ask them (the ISPs) worst they can say is no, its not like they are going to shoot you

Yeah, I can get satellite but from everything I've read, dial up is the lesser of two evils.
I was just wondering if someone who uses it thinks a particular modem works best and if there is a particular ISP that isn't all bloated with pop-ups etc, like AOL etc.

Virtually any external modem would be a good bet.  Most internal modems are junk.

Try finding a local ISP for dial-up.  Preferably one that actually runs its own modem pool.  Many just lease modem space from some other ISP, such as Level3.

Thanks, what kind of external modems are available are they all usb or do they have ethernet types?

Well, in checking out external modems there seems to be 2 basic types, usb and serial port.

The usb 's are way cheaper, they both seem to get mixed reviews.

Serial port one should be a bit better.  Yes, the USRobotics externals are decent modems.
