do you have to ping someone to get a proxy kill. if not than "maneuver kill" might be better terminology. not that big a deal.

The arena setting is acutally called "ManuverKillRange".  You will be awarded a maneuver (or proxy) kill if the following conditions are met:
1)  The enemy was not damaged by another player who is still "in sortie".
2)  You are within ManuverKillRange of them when they either:  Bail, are killed, are captured, disconnect.
3)  You are the closest enemy player to them.

Perk points are not awarded for proxy kills.

If you pinged them before they crashed, you are awarded perk points, and it's not considered a proxy kill.

They do count in kills/death, kills/sortie, kills/time in applicable score modes.  They don't contribute to points vs enemy.

This one explanes why you may not get the kill for flying someone into the ground with no friendly nearby. I don't think just a ping/hit sprite by another player will take the kill. But the level of damage required is low.

I was comparing my film from an FSO to the logs once to find out who had out flown me so well. The guy that got the kill had hit me with a crossing pot shot and went on to another squadie. He put one small hole in my canopy and was outside 3K when I went into the drink.

Before that I had thought that you had to do damage that effected handeling.

But it does. The kill goes to the player who did most damage to that plane. A single ping is all you need of you are the only one that ever hit him. Only when the plane hasn't been damaged by any amount, you can get a proxy kill.
