online computer games
« on: January 11, 2009, 02:39:02 PM »
Gentlemen,

Please let me know about games that work well with dial up.I recently wrote
Aces High and asked them why Aces works so well with my dial up connection
and other games don't.They said that they designed the game to work
efficiently and they had experience dealing with networks. So, what combat sim
games are out there that work well with dial up?(56k) :salute

Probably nothing recent I'm sorry to say....
And stuff that does support dial-up is probably old enough not to be supported..
Maybe check out IL2...  I think they support dial-up...  Not entirely sure...

The majority of games today are designed for the majority.  According to the Steam Hardware surveys, the vast majority of gamers are on high broadband speed (only 2.15% are on 56k or slower).  Good luck trying to find any live action games (maybe look at strategy turn based stuff?).

Text based MUDs.

That's about it, and you'll still be at a disadvantage vs broadband users.

I would suggest something turn-based.  Laser Squad Nemesis is excellent.

I have a really bad braodband connection but it is way faster than dialup.  My son tries to play COD4 online and if the ping rates are bad the servers refuse to allow him on.

Tough times for dialup guys right now...and it won't get any better.

What you can do is play some of the PBE games...(play by email).

Uncommon Valor was a great one.

The Civilization series is great for PBE actually. I know the mode is in #3, and pretty sure it's in 4 also.

unfortunately dial up is like a vcr compared to blueray...The only way dial up works good is if u have no packet loss under I believe a 288 ping minimum...Dial up is an old beast..I live in the woods in idaho and I can get a 5meg download and a 1meg upload through dsl with no problems..So good luck and move on to newer and better things !!S!!

My advice, don't try to do multiplayer online with a dialup connection.

Do Single Player, like Mount and Blade, or Fallout 3.
