From what I've Googled, his Compaq has an Asus board.  The A8M2N-LA to be exact.  Most RAM brands shouldn't be a problem.  You'll need DDR2 and your computer has two DIMM slots.  Also your motherboard only supports a maximum of 2GB of ram.  So you cannot get the 4gb you want.

This Crucial 2gb is a really good deal. $17.99 and Free Shipping.

Here is the Compaq specifications support page on your motherboard.

go to www.crucial.com and download and run their memory scanner.

It will take a minute to figure out what your system is and what memory you have and what you can take. They offer a money-back guarantee that any RAM you order from them that is identified by their scanner will work.

Plus they have great ram at great prices. Problem solved!

FYI, you have 2x256MB memory sticks in your PC, giving you 512MB.
Time's fun when you're having flies.
