I know I'm a scrounger, and that I tend to be cheap and not spend money where I don't have to.
But you mean to tell me you guys don't have a box full of keyboards in a closet someplace?

I have at least 6 good ones left that I salvaged from curbside "clean up" week 6 or 7 years ago.
Along with a couple of more modern "USB" type that I don't like as well.

Also if I tended to spill liquids on it often I think I'd get one of those silicone keyboards that you can roll up.
Give it a rinse, hang it up to dry for a couple hours and plug it back in.

Virtually indestructible,Can operate in shallow water, dusty, acidic, alkaline and damp environments. Robust silicone rubber design. Washable with water, alcohol or disinfectants

When I spilled soda on by keyboard I fixed it by unplugging it (it has no batteries, this is important), unscrewing the casing and rinsing it very thoroughly in hot water, letting it dry, rinsing again and letting it dry for a few days.

It fixed the stickiness and did not harm the keyboard.

I've had a number of the older ones get sticky, or stop working after a wash. Upon opening them up, I find the moisture/residue had actually seeped into the layers. Upon ever-so-careful separation of these layers and washing of the residue with hot water and a bit of pine sol in a bucket (you dip a rag in and wipe the parts, don't dip the parts) and making sure they dried, they were golden. Reassemble, keys back on (done it so many times I have QWERTY memorized by now) and it works like new.

There was a company that made clear overlays for keyboards doubt they made any for laptops though.  I'd try the Saran wrap.

Yes! that's them.. I had ordered a dozen of those for an auto shop client.. kept grease and all sorts of nasty stuff off the keyboard.  Had to be replaced once a month.

Funny you mentined about keyboard. The other day, my son decided he wanted to clean up my JS because he is helpful little guy, unfortunely he decided he wanted to use water. I had to take it apart and clean it up as best as I could. It is having problems but thankfully still useable until I can replace it. In case anyone is wondering, i use the X52 w/throttle control.
