Ice Fishing...:)
« on: January 16, 2009, 07:31:38 PM »
I live in Montana and just went ice fishing for the first time this season. I cut through 10" of ice, normal for this time of year. It got me remembering this video. I'm glad i fish up here.

I hate ice fishing. But I guess it takes all kinds.

Fishing, good. Fishing on ice, bad. Only good part is its easier to keep the beer cold.

Plus the fish aren't as fun to fight when you are just trying to pull them through a hole, I like when the pike try to drag my boat across the lake. :)
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Ice fishing is a lot like golf, it's a good excuse to hang out minus the women, and get drunk.

If you've got a shanty it can be fun.  You can put a heater in there and even bring a TV with you.  In the darkness of the shanty you can look right down through the water and see the fish nibbling at your bait.  Add a cooler of beer and you've got a decent way to waste an afternoon and maybe put dinner on the table.

Sitting out in the open, however, is a totally different story.  I'll never forget sitting in a restaurant here on the lake, the wind blowing the snow in a cloud across the ice, and every so often it would let up enough to allow a man sitting on a bucket ice fishing to be seen.  That cannot be fun and the fish cannot taste so good to justify the torture.

quoted for truth  :)

It has been colder than it has been in a while down here in West Tennessee (8 degrees 3 nights in a row!).  So our duck field had about 2-4inch thick ice on top of it.  So we took our John Deere 6420 down in waist deep water, opened up a hole, sunk a four wheeler, and killed 7 limits in 30 minutes   :)

Ice fishing would be great if you have:

1.  An insulated hut
2.  Comfy chairs
3.  Toilet with heated seat
4.  Flat screen 1080p TV
5.  Blu Ray Player
6.  Internet
7.  Good computer
8.  Hot tub
9.  Hot chick who stops by for an hour every six or seven hours
10.  Various intoxicants
11.  Some form of "hut service"...like room service in a hotel.

Put me down for a week.

Anything less than the above...forgetaboutit.

Finnish version of ice fishing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUOZmwt_2SU

Oh, just to be sure the ending might be considered NSFW  :salute

Even though it's a thousand-year tradition here (and this clip was aired primetime on national tv).

Of course. And best of all the fish pattern around structure just like when theres no ice. I mostly like fishing walleye and Pike but during the day will move onto the flats for pan fish. My idea of ice fishing is buying the biggest portable shelter made, putting a TV in it and a lawnchair WITH the heater, setting tip ups outside, and jigging in my shirtsleeves inside. First of course I find the structure I want with my E-lectronics and naturally chop holes with my gas auger. In other words "no roughing it".

Man I aint sitting out there in the cold. BTW fish caught in water so cold taste the best. Most of all crappies. Crappies you take out of the ice is the best eating in the world, even better then walleye or perch.

Fish stays fresh when it usually survives all the way to the frying pan. They freeze solid but wake up once you start to rinse them in warm water (if you didn't break their necks after catching). I always remember my grandfather emptying his frozen fish bag to the kitchen sink and the fish started flopping around after melting.

Funny ice "Hunting Story"!

2 Guys went duck hunting. The lake was frozen like always with no open water. These guys use dynamite to blow the ice up for open water. One dude threw the stick of dynamite and his buddie lab ran to retrieve it... Funny you say, hold on gets better. The dog brought the dynamite back and dropped it by  his proud owner. The guy kicked it right under the new F150 and they ran. It exploded putting the pickup, themselves and the poor lab in the water. They were rescued with no pick up truck ... LOL

The sheriff came out and he knew the gentlemen. It is mandatory that he file a report with the ATF when explosions with dynamite happens. Not only did they get a $65,000 fine from ATF unlawful use of explosives, the new pick up was not insured. Another $30,000 loss. Total loss $95,000, experience, priceless!
