All the eggs in one basket?
« on: December 06, 2000, 05:47:00 AM »
Or all the AcesHigh playing options one the same server?
Last night we were dumped from server, and couldent log on again for a long period of time. It has happend before and will probably happen again.

The problem is that its not possible to play AH in any way when these things happens. Not even H2H is possible under these circumstances, and thats a shame because thats when the paying customers needs it most.

As far as I know the HTC servers only role in H2H is to set up the contact between players, because the hosting players computer is the gameserver. Why not find another place for setting up games, than the HTC server?

One option could be The Zone as it would be a good place for marketing AcesHigh, but any solution that means, that H2H is available when HTC connection is impossible, would do.

I think it won't work, since it's not a client to client application. (Even in H2H it goes through a server at one point.)

I dunno how exactly it's coded, but my guess is that changing that would take quite a massive ammount of work...

It is a client to client application the way I descibe it in the first post. The server is checking for the account, and do the matchmaking. That work could be done at any server including TheZone.

If you dont know how its coded, why do you give negative feedback to the idea? Shouldent you let the HTC ppl decide if its too much work or not?

Yes you are probably right Maniac. I think HTC made H2H the way it is to avoid that the H2H version would start to live its own life on the internet beyond the control of the firm, - and it sure would if it was possible to play directly via TCP/IP or IPX.

My suggestion regarding The Zone solves that problem because the Zone can do all the same things as the HTC server does with the H2H games: Checking for account, new versions etc. and the game would still be impossible to play without HTC having control.
