Seagate Barracuda drive problems
« on: January 21, 2009, 01:11:20 AM »
Seagate is reporting problems with certain Barracuda drives (7200.11 and ES.2 SATA) where the drive may become inaccessible on power up.  If you recently built a system with one of these perhaps you would like to check out: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931

Might not want to apply new Segate firmware just yet; it bricks some drives: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=14011.  Probably best to do complete backups and wait (that's what I did with my ES.2).

I've got a 750GB Seagate 7200.11 but I've had it for about a year now so I think I'm good. The article made it sound like only the ones made around December 08' might be defective.

Actually, the Seagate article has been since edited to read "through" December, not "in" December.  The article also implies they've fixed the firmware update so it doesn't brick your drive.  But you have to get it via emailing support, which seems weird to me.
