She doesn't suffer the sort of control stiffness the Jug does at high speed,

What control stiffness?

Just what is it about the hog that makes you regular guys fly it so much? Please don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it any shape or form, we all have our different flying styles and taste, I'm just trying to understand what makes it stand out for you.

Quite honestly, the single reason I fly it all the time is because it looks the way airplanes are supposed to look!  For me, it's all about the beauty of the plane.  I've never seen another that even remotely compares to it!

As far as the other planes go, I kind of like the pony, and even the 38 a bit, as far as looks go.  But they'd be a far distant second and third choice for me.  IMO, the rest of the planes are pretty ugly.  The spit has a goofy-lookin' itty bitty tail, the jugs wings look too small, the german planes have an unfinished, blocky look, with goofy tubes stickin' out here and there, etc... (IMO)

In short, nothing looks as good as the F4U's!  They look "just right"!

As for bombers- the B17 and the B25 have that "just right" look too, but you wouldn't catch me flying a Lanc, JU, or B24...

Again, I base my preference on looks.  The performance (which is great in the F4U, of course) is secondary for me.  I'd stick with the F4U series regardless of how they flew in the game...

I agree with you 83%! lol. The B-17 and B-25 look perfect, and im not very fond of the late-war German Iron, but I think the P-47 is the classic looking American fighter, and downright gorgeous, while the F4U's nose is just WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long. In fact, that nose is really the sole reason I don't fly the corsair more often.

What control stiffness?
there is a mild compression at speeds around 550-600
unlike the 51 which i only see it compress when the wings go off
snowey flying since tour 78

Is the C-hog perked because of the cannons ? I hardly fly the F4u.

Tomcat,

In in-game history the C-Hog was perked because when she was first introduced without one the Main Arena was filled with nothing but HOing C-Hogs.

Additionally, this was an EXTREMELY rare bird, with only 200 F4U-1Cs produced. And, unlike the similarly-rare Ta-152, the F4U-1C is much more competitive in the environment of the Mains (the 152 is a good fighter at very high altitudes, which is a situation that just doesn't translate in the Mains. Works quite nicely in scenarios, tho).

Removing the perk would still have a destabilizing effect, because then all you'd see in LW would be C-Hogs and 4-Hogs.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Thanks for the replies boys, like I mentioned earlier, I wasn't trying to knock the crate or it's pilots, just get a handle on what makes it tick, I'll have to take one up and give it a try from time to time I think :salute

Best way to get a feel for it is to take one of these extremely competent F4U players into a training or dueling arena and let them show you a thing or two. I used to love dropping flaps and getting into a rolling scissors with some players between 5k and 2500 and that would give you a nice sweaty sheen when you were finished either way. I cut my teeth in this game back in the early days learning the FW-190 series which can translate over to the F4U very nicely.

One phrase you should never forget in a Corsair of any series....ENERGY you gotta have it or have the ability to regain it to win the fight.

Don't need speed to kill in a f4u.  I think I proved that many times along with other good F4U pilots.

For me it's just a good stable plane. I mean it dives well with out compression. It turns great at the right speed and it can burn e like crazy to cause an overshoot. What I like most is that long nose. It gives me a reference point for aiming besides the sights of course. Frankly for me it's a reference point for all other planes. If you fight a good f4u pilot you will have problems no matter what plane you are in.

I like what mountain man said too. It is just a beautiful plane. I was watching one of my films in chase mode and said my goodness that's a beautiful plane. Ironically, I think the TBM is a beautiful plane as well and to me symbolizes wwII like none other.

One of the main reasons I join missions and fly FSO is so I will get out of the f4U and learn other planes. I've enjoyed the p38, A8, Dora, TA152 and a horde of others. I'm not very good in those planes but wow do they have some strengths and more importantly they are just fun to fly for something different. I'm always impressed with good p38 pilots. Have been since Skull and RP626 in AW.
