Phone lines or ???
« on: January 24, 2009, 05:18:45 PM »
Hello everyone:   Recently I purchased a new computer w/Vista.  My old computer on WindowsXP-SP2.

On my old computer I've had NO problems connecting my DSL & phone lines & was able to receive
phone calls & dial out while I was logged on to the computer.

On my new computer I'm able to do everything as I did on the OLD, however, my DSL & phone lines are
dead, no incoming phone calls nor am I able to dial out!   When I disconnect the phone & DSL lines from the NEW computer my phone works!

Btw, in order to use my new computer I have to disconnect from the old & connect to the new.

Any ideas as to what causes this problem?

Uhm, that was more confusing than it was an insight to what is going on.... What do you mean with the following?
Btw, in order to use my new computer I have to disconnect from the old & connect to the new.

If you have DSL, it uses a regular phone-line to connect to a DSL Modem, such as this one:

From there you use a Ethernet (CAT5) cable to connect your computer to the DSL modem where your computer receives its Internet connection. So, if you are plugging a phone line into your computer to receive DSL Internet, there's a problem.

Can you explain exactly HOW your phone lines and DSL are connected to the computer?

There should be two ports on your computer... one for the network cable (wide... 8 terminals), and if your computer has a phone modem, it will have another port for the phone cable (narrow... 4 terminals (although only two typically get used).

Typically, if you have DSL, it's not necessary to plug in the narrow phone cable at all.  It's possible the phone modem is faulty, pulling down the phone lines...

Or am I completely off base here?

What about those perky DSL filters? Could one of them either not be in place or be faulty?

Special thanks to Denholm, Tigger29 & Delirium:   :lol

Your kindness, patience & helpfulness really paid off in Aces , now to answer questions:
Denholm, what I meant to say is I disconnected everything from the old computer &
connected the "phone & dsl lines exactly the way they were in WindowsXP (old computer)".   Thx for ur pix, I've exactly the same setup, 'twas very helpful!

Tigger29, ur input, especially ur paragraph 3 turned out 2b the answer to my problems
I unplugged my phone line from the computer leaving my dsl line connected & was
surprised to hear my phone ringing.   Everything's working fine now.  TY.

Delirium, chkd the dsl filters, everything's ok.   Once again, my sincere gratitude for ALL of ur help.

I'm glad I could help.. just leave the phone line disconnected from your computer.. it's not needed anymore with DSL.
