FPS
« on: March 01, 2009, 06:19:29 PM »
Hello all, I have played this game for a few years and until recently I haven't had any problems with it. I used to run it on a cheap dell dimension 4700 and the game ran fine. Recently I have picked up a Toshiba laptop with an AMD processor, 200G HD, and 3G of ram and also an ATI graphics card. I have been having a problem with low frame rates. I have turned all of the settings down and my game is major laggy. I'm running an FPS around 12 and 20 on a good day (i know it's horrible). I will post my DXDIAG and hope to hear back from someone, this isn't making a whole lot of sense to me so maybe someone out there will know. Thanks!

The video card is uing 1.2GB of you system RAM, reducing the available RAM to 1.8GB, and Vista is eating up another 1GB, leaving only 800MB available for actual program use.

My bet is the computer is swapping very badly due to lack of free available memory.  It is absolutely rediculious for a video card to be set to share 1.2GB of system RAM.

Must be trying to figure out some way to make Crysis to run ok.

You are going to need to kill a number of background processes to free up some more RAM, and/or adjust the amount of RAM the video card wants to steal from the system.

Be sure to set the game to use as few resources as possible.  Set the "Maximum Texture Size" to 128, do not preload anything.

Also be sure to disable any power management in the OS.

Hey thanks skuzzy, wow that is ridiculous. Now that i think of it a number of games that should run perfectly fine on this computer aren't and are acting the same way. It seems like the way you talk there is a way to adjust the amount of ram my video card uses to a lower level to acchieve optimum playability, how would i do that?

check your bios settings, if there are options for allocating memory size. good luck!

Check with the manufacturer.

Also note, you need to kill the "ReadyBoost" and "SuperFetch" services as well.  They will use up as much free RAM as they can filling it with applications Vista thinks you need.

from the looks of your pc specs, upgrading to windows xp would really improve your performance. vista needs at least 1.5GB for it to run decently, but your pc having additional background tasks would really bog down gaming in AH2.

some bios do not allow for you to allocate shared memory size, and that may be the case here. since you run too many processes, i suggest you take a hard look at what programs you really need and uninstall those that you dont.

use these tools to clean up your pc.

revo uninstaller
ccleaner

also, your antivirus programs might in themselves be viruses (norton/mcafee). i suggest you also uninstall them and run this instead: avg

let us know.

I've gone through and deleted all unessesary programs. Some i dont know for sure if i need so i didnt delete but most i did. I am seeing a little bit faster gameplay but still horribly slow. I can't think of anything else to do to get this working right. I wish i had some spare cash to try to figure out whats wrong with my desktop, it's old but i have a kickarse videocard in there. Anymore ideas?
