Networking question
« on: January 24, 2009, 09:44:22 PM »
I have a sierra C885 wireless USB modem on the AT&T 3G wireless network and a Linksys wireless router. What I want to do is set up a small network in my house. Nothing to big just access for my kid in his room and the Wii in the living room.

The problem is I cant figure out how to get the internet to run through the router, I dont even know if its possible. I've done a lot of searching online but have had very little luck. I did see something that you have to enable internet connection sharing but I've cant even see how to do that on this particular connection.

Any ideas????

which linksys router do you have? I have a network with both wired and wireless setups on it. All gaming rigs use the wired, the kids + their friends laptops us the wireless. If your router is NOT a wireless one you'll have to wire the connections. If you have a wireless router all the settings are acessable through the IP address 192.168.0.1 or something similar. Open your browser, instead of httpXXXX type in the IP numbers that came with your router.

After that your on your own   :D  I still stumble thru every time I'm in there and don't know enough to help more than that.

[. . .] instead of httpXXXX type in the IP numbers that came with your router. [. . .]

As I recall all Linksys routers use 192.168.1.1 for the access IP.
We learn something new everyday. :D

Also, from looking it appears to just be a small USB stick modem, correct?  If so, you can plug the Router into a open Ethernet port on your Computer (one end of cord into PC other into "Internet" port on router).  Simply "Set up a small office or home network" and say "This computer connects directly to the internet".  It should lead you through the steps and it should route internet access through the router and around the house.

If need be you change change some settings in the router page <192.168.1.1> and enable Wireless security, and change the channel of it for more range.

This address is for the local network only. The Linksys router will obtain another, public IP address when connecting to the Internet. This is the default gateway.

As an administrator, you can change this default IP address as needed. Changing the router's default IP address may be necessary, for example, to avoid conflict with the IP address of an Internet modem or another router already installed on 192.168.1.1. A common alternate IP address setting for Linksys routers is 192.168.2.1.
