Let's get some information about your system, a DxDiag output is most useful in this respect.

Got to Start>Run. Type in: dxdiag
Afterward press OK. Now a new panel should appear. After it finishes loading (Loading bar is located on the bottom left of the application) press the, "Save All Information..." button. Now save the file to a location easy to find, such as your desktop. Afterward go to the location you saved the file to and open the file. Now copy the first third (1/3) of the document and paste it in a response here.

That information will help us in determining what the issue might be.

Ok guys........ I don't know what was wrong but I changed to a logitec headset that plugged into the sound card instead of the plantronics that plugged into the usb port and that fixed the problem... It hasn't quit since.......I'd still like to hear any ideas anyone has though.........thanks for the consideration.

Thats a pretty weak computer. The USB headset most likely takes a lot more power and CPU cycles than a regular mic. So the CPU was dropping your sound to keep everything else running. I hope your saving your pennies for a new box  :D
