Lag, packets etc.
« on: October 22, 1999, 04:41:00 PM »
Here are strange things I experienced, concerning connection, lag etc. Please, don’t take it as a whine, but as an effort to point that these things really happen.

Casen 1:

P51 who lost a wing on my FE landed safe, no damage on his FE. I posted about it before.

Case 2:

I met level p51, we turned into each other at some 4-5k, and Immelmanned after the merge. I did not go for HO in few passes which followed, neither the opponent seemed to go for it. Then, few seconds after the merge, I started hearing pings. It was some 5 seconds or so after the pass. He obviously went for HO, he had the shot, but no tracers were visible. After another HO from his side I lead turned him and got on his 6. I followed for good 20 seconds, d11 on his 6. At that time I got heavily pinged and killed !

No other plane was in the sector, both map and visible check after each pass. The guy I fought got the kill, not some outside intruder. After the kill I asked on open channel about it, and then another pilot I trust stated that he got killed by the same pilot at 4k distance.

Case 3:

A Spit was on my far 6, some 7k or so, level. I looped gently and went to cross path with the Spit and run for home. He was now some 3k away and obviously going for HO, so I rolled and pulled down at d12-13 in front of him, to spoil the shot. I believe most people can’t hit in that situation. I looked back, saw him firing, but was positive he would not hit. Then, some 20 seconds later, I get pings and lose my wingtip. Spit was 4k or so behind me now, with no speed after his hard turn and out of the fight. I try to land, but he catches me and kills me on ditch. OK, net lag etc…I explain it to myself. After some 30 seconds in tower, I take off from the field some 2-3 sectors away from the scene of the incident. Just as I pulled my gear, I get heavily pinged and same guy gets another kill. No enemy planes were in the sector.

Hristo,
I/JG 51

P.S.

My ping time is 244 ms, and no packet loss.

I feel for you hristo.  I have been telling people in the game for a long time that I have been getting shot down from pilots 1.2 to 1.5 k behind me.
Tonight I had a 6 call of a 109 2k behind me coming up on my spit.  I looked back, saw the range display at 1.5k and I died.

Earlier I was flying B17's with gnfitr side by side.  My range to him was 160 feet.  His range to me was 280.  I could see into his cockpit we were so close.

I was connected with a 56k modem at 48k.  I pinged the server at 195 mils.  But, I did disco out a while later.

My idea on this?  Server lag.  Both on my side and the game server side.  When I discoed out  when flying the B17, my connection was dropped.  Even after I was displayed the host connection error, I could see Gnfitr's plane still flying around.  I tried ramming it but the error box was in my way.  Hehe..

All I can say is, I wish I had a faster connect speed.  Like the ASDL or Cable connect speeds.  Then maybe I could start killing people from 1.5k out.  By the the way, Hmble, the pilot of the 109, said his range when he fired was 400 feet.

That's a big differance from the 1.5 that my display had on him.

Food for thought.
