Well most of the time I can tell if it is an enemy by the Dar... I just think it would be more fun not knowing what type of enemy plane it is until you get close and it would also keep all The enemy's in A 6k radius from trying to chase your perk down.
Two things wrong with that:
1. Unless you hug your ack all the time, you spend most of your time outside the dot-dar.
2. With the exception of the jets/rockets, perk planes aren't distinguished from their non-perked cousins until you are 800 yards away.
Now, there's lots of variables that go into identifying something. Size, view angle, pilot's eyesight, etc etc. A P-38 from the top is easily identifiable. A P-38 from the side provides a smaller profile than many single-seat fighters. I wouldn't mind some type of gradually increasing ID such as an icon showing single / twin / 4 engine gradually resolving into inline / radial engine(s), then resolving into a plane type. You would still have to identify friend vs foe early on (particularly in the uncontrolled MA environment) but it would still give a bit more suspense to the encounter.
