Question to history buffs
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:10:48 PM »
As test firing guns was SOP for USAAF aircrew and fighter pilots, did the Luftwaffe have the same procedure? Knowing that the US a/c travelled long distances at high altitude they were running greater risk of guns icing up than the Luftwaffe who often came straight from their home base much because of the fuel shortages.

Just out of curiosity, did the Luftwaffe also use a 'test fire' procedure before combat? If not, why? I can think of the above mentioned reason of icing but I'm also wondering how the US and German weapons compared in terms of reliability.

AFAIK, as long as you had your gun heaters turned on and your weapons charged you were good to go.  But I'm no expert.
