Ok so shady might have been the wrong word choice.
Here is how I see it.

With Vonage, you get stand alone hardware, it connects to your broadband, and goes to a phone.
As long as your broadband connect is active you are going to have phone service.

With Magicjack, you get a usb device, if the computer is off, so is your phone. Also being a USB device I'd be willing to bet that if the phone rings while your flying your going to lose CPU cycles.

With skype its all software, again if the computer is down your not going to get calls.
However you would probably get a notification that someone called when you get back online.
Which has its own advantages.

I have been with Vonage for over four years now, after they dumped the customer service from what ever hell hole country it was in at the beginning the service has been great. Can't complain about price hikes either still paying the same as from the start.

Vonage will work anywhere in the world with a broadband connection.  What they mean by "not available" is the fact that you will not have a local phone number.
Strange we tried it and were unable to connect, after calling Vonage it was they who said we would be unable to use it here.
This was about 2-3 years ago and never tried it since, we have been happy with a combo of cell and majicjack.

Perhaps your connection wasn't sufficient.  You can, and always have been able to, use Vonage anywhere in the world with a broadband connection.
