Hard drive woes
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:23:46 PM »
Yesterday morning I was on the puter and hard drive made a noise like a snare drum, then a min or so later, everything  came to a screeching halt.  I thought, hmmm, something wrong here, tried to reboot and all it would do is start to boot and keep rebooting.  I took it in to a local repair shop and he said it was hard drive failure, which I suspected.  My drive was less than a year old so didnt think trouble would be finding me.

Anyway, the shop had a new drive in it just like I had before.  Now Im reformatting and getting everything back that I can remember I had.  One problem I am having that I just cant figure out is, getting the mic to work again.  I have a gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l/33l motherboard with onboard sound.  It worked fine when other hd was in, and I had no trouble configuring.  I can do the tests and it shows mic is working.  But I can get no sound out of speakers from mike, and I can get aces high to put the sound out, so I know sound card is working,  just having trouble with mic so far as I know.  Any ideas?

Drivers

Make sure you get all motherboard drivers loaded right after installing OS.

IN the sound applet of control panel make sure the 'recording' devices have microphone selected. I believe that during a default installation under XP it is muted.

I know it sounds stupid but make sure the mike is switched on.  I've forgotten to so so in the past after listening to loud music or watching movies.

Mic is switched on.  Also I have it configured in the motherboard soundcard setup.  The testing recognizes the mike and the "vu" meters go up and down.   When I open up the speaker thingie on the toolbar at the bottom, when I switch to the input side of it, the mic, cd, sw synth, and stuff volume knobs are grayed out.  Only thing functional is the volume.  The mic and stuff is not clicked in the check box to be muted.  LOL im using the same exact cd to load the motherboard stuff as when this was new, and it worked first time.  I'm currently downloading a driver from gigabyte to see if it fixes it.  The Realtek site said to get a driver from the motherboard man. to get the proper driver.

That fact that it is grayed out smacks of motherboard resource driver.

Did you go to the control panal and under Sounds and Audio Devices then the Voice tab and make sure the correct voice recording device was selected and then use test hardware?  It sounds like you did.  You might want to check the Audio tab too to make sure the correct devices are selected.

I had a similar issue recently after moving my sound card to a different slot where the input side was greyed out.  I can't remember how I fixed it but it was pretty easy.

Sound card is onboard.  and also, the new driver from gigabyte didnt help.  Guess I could always reformat and start over at this point... :cry

Look for chipset drivers and motherboard resource drivers (not the sound chip).

Reloaded drivers and stuff.  To make a long story short, apparently when I click the speaker icon in the taskbar, I have to select the recorder area to switch to mic inputs and stuff.  Those boxes still stayed grayed out but finally I clicked " apply "  and then the onboard recorder worked.  Mic worked in aces high also.  So I am getting there slowly, but some things just seem to work different for some reason.  Ah well, as long as I can get my aces high fix.....
