Observer bugs oh my, Gunner Bugs oh my!
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:07:37 AM »
I often have someone who rides along with me when I fly, so we have a lot of experience with the observer/gunner bugs. I will list what i remmeber at the moment.
1. Observer gets credit for a kill
2. Observer can't bail after pilot ejects, has to restart game in fact
3. Observer gets killed
4. When in vehicle with more than one gunnery position, after observer/gunner joins, the host pilot cannot switch positions.

I am not sure how it is supposed to work with the observer/gunner, but if it were me, i would make the observer( for vehicles with zero gunner positions ) a transparent ride-along with no actual stake in the battle, no possibility of scoring or being scored off of.
A gunner however should actually play into scoring , but the fact that noone can switch to any other gunnery positions once a gunner joins seems to defeat the purpose. There should even  be a way to switch positions with  someone if you are in a vehicle with only two positions, gun and driver(M3, etc.) I understand why if the host/pilot dies the gunner is not allowed to continue the sortie, but even that seems like a possibility if the ability to join that person were removed during the remainder of the sortie.

I think these bugs shouldn't be too hard to  quash should they? I hope not, your subscriber base might actually go up if people were able to play together a little easier. (My gf plays often and loves the game, though she doesnt fly she loves to run supps and do supportive type tasks, she also loves to fly as an observer when I fly the single engine planes.)

In addendum to the above, upon further experimentation, it appears that when a person joins another in say for example a PT boat, the host pilot, cannot switch positions once the guest joins, but the guest can move about to any of the positions except the one the host is in. Very annoying.

Also when a guest joins a host in a group of bombers, the fire all button no longer fires all the other planes guns, even though the guest is only in one other plane and in one position. Rather it only fires the single plane's guns, leaving a whole plane's weapons unusable.

I suggest the popup to choose whether to be a gunner or an observer be given to anyone joining *any* vehicle, making an observer a ride along with god like view priveleges would be nice too, though I do see reasons not to grant this, at least in ground vehicles. However giving them views like bombers get when observing in a fighter might lend to easier and better instructional training flights.

The "observer" in a gv becomes essentially your gunner.  It allows you to concentrate on driving while he shoots at things.  He is getting the kills because he is the one shooting.  He "dies" because he got shot and you didn't.

As far as I know, the "pilot" can only jump to a gun with a gunner/observer on board in a formation of bombers.  This boots the observer into one of the drones.

I have never flown with a gunner on a single bomber and tried to jump to a gun so I don't know for sure that that is true.  But, you don't need to jump to a gun because that is what the gunner is there for.

IIRC gunners can bail from stricken aircraft by switching to the pilot position and ejecting normally after the original pilot has ejected. That's how I've done it in the past.
