its not over folks, here is a statement from MS Kelda Rericha:
“I can confirm the closure of Aces Studio. Following our annual strategy-review process, IEB is making adjustments within our business to align our people against our highest priorities, and the closure of Aces Studio is one of those changes.

We are committed to the Flight Simulator franchise which has proven to be a successful PC based game for the last 27 years. You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great LIVE experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time.”

and here are more detailed infos from Robert S. Randazzo from PMDG, if anybody is interested to read here:

rofl. We heard the the same stuff as MS murdered FASA Interactive, Bungie, and several other studios. All dead. Don't hold your breath.

Wow, that WW1 sim looks like it will be a lot of fun! :rock  I'm getting it.

Where's some information about the A-10 sim?  That should be awesome.  I had a blast flying A-10 Cuba! when it came out, it was a great sim for its time.

Blackshark looks like a great sim as well,  the last helicopter sims I flew were Longbow and Longbow 2 back in '96 - flew the heck out of them.

Blackshark's good, but very detailed and really quite tricky. I believe the A10 sim is by the same team. The DCS team that produced Blackshark have stated they are working on an A10 sim as the next in the series.

You can already import 10m digital elevation map files and build terrain on the fly. That would be a rather pointless activity and ungodly expensive.

Some of the U.S. is available in 1m and a lot in 10m. I believe the digital mapping you are thinking of is photo mapping. Companies will still produce upgrades and addons for FS9 and FSX for a long time. I think MS will package and sell the source/rights if they do not intend to produce FS any longer. No one from ACES can speak to that.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I saw this article "Journey's End for Flight Simulator" over at the BBC and thought of this thread.

Also, here's a video history of FS1 through FS9 I had been meaning to post.

This paragraph made me chuckle a bit:

Quote
Then there was something I have never seen included before in a flight sim. Soon as I saw it I thought, "Of course! Why didn't someone do this before?" You can adjust the machine guns convergence point with a visual slider. Brilliant!

Indeed, no flight sim ever did adjust convergence in a similar way  :lol

I think Rise of Flight will be a really fun sim - hopefully it has good multiplayer.
