Cloudy while flying
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:00:25 PM »
I had just reinstalled everything on my computer, including Aces High, when my video card went wonky and reverted me to 4 bit color, saying that I needed the latest drivers. And so, when I get the drivers finally downloaded and installed, everything seems fine. So, I log into Titanic Tuesday, when lo and behold, I get to see some funky clouds when I sit on the runway. Also, before I had to reinstall, I was able to set the slider for graphics quality to Maximum Detail, and Ground view range to 3 miles, without any loss in framerate. Now, I have to set the quality way down, the ground view range way down, and even then I still have a framerate of thirty, although I used to have a frame rate of around 60. I don't have the Hi-res texture skin installed yet, so I am running the res at 512, with Screen dimensions at 1200x1042 or something around that. I am using an ATI Radeon X700 with the latest drivers from their website. Any suggestions as to why my computer has taken such a big hit?

Im getting identical picture with my ATI x1650pro.  After I get pinged by something, the clouds turn into terrible black spotty streaks across most of screen.  Here I'm fighting a 205 directly in front, very hard to hit.  ANy suggestions?  Thanks

both look like video driver issues. Newest isn't always best. Too many people jump on the bandwagon when a new set come out thinking its got to be better than what I got. I had an ATI X850 and ran the 4.12 CAT drivers on it. Those are the same drivers I used on the ATI 9800 pro I have before that. Never any problems. I'd find out what drivers the card shipped with....you do still have the disks right? Use driver cleaner, and reinstall the old drivers first. See if that clears it up.

Other thing is you might send Skuzzy a note asking him which drivers he recommends for your cards. He might have an answer for you.

I would, but I am worried that I might have to go back to 4 bit, like when I was installing the software and drivers and such. I will try that when I get home though, so thanks.  :salute

Did you make sure to clean (fully remove) all associated drivers before installing new ones? Failing to do so can very easily cause this problem. Also OpenGL cards (Quatro for instance) will always do this in my experience.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I do not know how to remove all the drivers before installing new ones. Where could I find them in XP? Also, I have no idea if I have an OpenGL card.

All drivers from ATI and NVidia have a remover in the Windows Control Panel under the "Add/Remove Programs" ICON.

It is imperative to remove any old drivers before trying to install new ones.

Sorry for the Double post, but wiping the drivers, and restarting the computer allowed the card to reinstall the drivers that worked. And so, it works the way it's supposed to. Thank you all! :salute

Start and then Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features under Vista) and then Nvidia Drivers. At the top click on Uninstall.

I usually tell people to invest in a good cleaning program to remove any remaining elements because I have had the uninstaller fail to get them all before.
