Hi Mates
Wanted to tell you all what a great job you do in AH with sounds and skins. To an old geezer like me, truly astounding. Keep up the good work.
Reading the various messages about sounds, etc., I thought that I might make a couple of comments.
I am a very lucky guy. I grew up in the 1940's. My Step Dad was a Navy pilot who found himself in charge of advanced aviation training at Pensacola Naval Air Station from 1943-1946. I was in Grammer School in those days and he took me flying in just about everything the Navy had that could hold a couple of people. From the Yellow trainers (Stearman), SNJ, PBY, Kingfisher, PBM and even a TBM. I would sit in an airman's lap and we would strap in together. Very much fun, believe me.
So I have had flying in my life for a long time. Got my license when I was 17 and after college, flew fixed wing aircraft in the Army in the 1960's. Later in life I was lucky enough to be partners in a company wherein we could have our own airplanes and I flew around in a Seneca and Duke for a lot of years. Health problem got me out of the cockpit in the early '80's.
As we began to put computers into our business in the mid 1980's, I got real interested in those.
I found Flight Simulator when it first came out and fiddled around with that for years. Still fly it from time to time. Fun to shoot an ILS approach to SF in a storm.
I was also lucky to join the Confederate Air Force back in the late '70's. And, as we sponsered the restoration of one of the planes (Martin B-26, not all), I spent considerable time down there and flew in a number of WWII aircraft. Two seat Mustang, Spit, B-17. B-24, C47, right seat in B-25 a number of times, and an SBD as well as a few others.
So, I have heard quite a lot of engine sounds over the years. I got into WB back in the middle '90's with a great gang of guys. Their sounds left a lot to be desired but better than Flight Sim. Came into AH Beta and now only fly online here. Sounds are getting better and better.
However, the very best, most realistic sounds I have heard in a simulation program was an add- on to Flight Sim from an outfit called Mid-Atlantic Air Museum. They have a restored B-25 that they fly around, and they simply recorded cockpit sound and engine sound inside and outside. Start up shut down, etc.
I can tell you from experience, that they have nailed the B-25. I believe the also have a C-47 as well, but I didn't get that one. You have to buy a CD.
Also, their graphics (skins) are easily the very best I have seen.
I don't know much about sound files, but perhaps if someone is interested I might try and find the wav files they use for their B-25 sounds. If any of you fly Flight Simulator, might be fun for you to get their B-25. Has a totally interactive cockpit. Can make it as realistic as you want.
Sorry to be so long winded.
Again, keep up the good work. You are doing a great job. By the way, greebo, why don't you do a SEAC B-24? British green over gray, with the light blue, dark blue roundels. Got some great pics of one. You also do great work.
Cheers to all
