Quad Core Vs Core I7
« on: March 11, 2009, 01:24:49 PM »
Hello gents, I’m looking to buy a new PC and I was wondering if the new Intel Core I7 CPU’s are worth the extra money.

Would the performance increase be noticeable if I went for Core I7 over Quad Core, if both of the chips run the same clock speed ?

For eample:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz
--------------------------------
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz

I'm going to use the PC mainly for gaming/photoshop.

Any input would be great,

Kaz,

<S>

A i7 system is going to need to use DDR3 while you can use DDR2 with the Q9400.  With the extra bandwidth form the memory, larger cache, etc, the i7 should handily defeat the Q9400.  But it's going to cost you because the i7 boards are $$$ and DDR3 isn't quite as cheap as DDR2.

^^^

What he said.  You're all-in cost will be higher with the I7 due to the price differences in the CPU, motherboard and RAM.  You'll also need to run RAM in groups of three matched sticks (DDR3) vs. two with DDR2 and the motherboards generally accept much faster RAM (up to DDR3 2000) but you don't have to go with that fast of RAM.

In the end not only will the I7 beat the quad, the system as a whole will shred it.

If it was me I would do 2 things depending on money. I would wait for the I7 prices to come down or I would get the I7 now if I had the money. It may be if you wait intel will get a little competition from AMD.

The i5's should be out by July, along with another Intel price cut.  That is if you can wait that long.

What is the performance of the I5s?

The i5's will be more of the mainstream variant of the i7.  Think of them as the E6xxx to the E4xxx/E5xxx C2D series.

The i7 920 can be had for 230.00  I agree the MBs are more expensive and so is the DDR3...  For a budget build with the x58 chipset I would get an ASUS P6T (plain board no Deluxe) the 920 processor and get the OCZ Intel Extreme XMP Tri Channel Kit part number OCZ3X1600LV6GK .  It has two profiles that can be activated via the BIOS one at 1600 and one at 1800.  This is great if your not going extreme Overclocking to the CPU using the QPI.

If your going to overclock the 920... I have this setup P6T, 920, OCZ OCZ3P2000LV6GK....  I have the CPU Overclocked @ 4.2 (have had it at 4.6GHz) (On air using the Vendetta 2 with 1366 bracket) and the memory is running at 2400 MHz.  This thing screams.  The ASUS P6T is the only board I have been able to get over 2200 MHz on any memory flavor and remain stable and within thermal conditions on air.  A H20 system is a different story
