Flyboys was pretty bad, but it wasn't the worst airplane movie ever made.  That distinction goes to "Memphis Belle" with Billy Zane.

IIRC that was based on a historical incident, too. It might have been Frank Luke.

IIRC, Frank Luke used his handgun to resist capture after he was on the ground - and was shot by the German soldiers with rifles.  I've never heard of him using his handgun from a plane in flight.  And of course, with me being from Arizona, it makes me an instant authority on all things pertaining to the fellow Arizonian Frank Luke.  :D
Luke's mistake was bringing a handgun to a rifle fight. OTOH if he'd had a Glock instead of that POS Colt 1911, things might have turned out diffferently.

Flyboys and the latest Pearl Harbor Production.

Seems as they came from the same Producers and Directors.

Horrible.....no accuracy at all.  Effects were lousy as well.

I don't think there will ever be a truly good aircombat movie again, perhaps a more modern or futuristic one but never WWI or WW2 again.
Once again, check out Dark Blue World. The air combat segments are pretty good. (I dare you not to laugh at the bicycle scenes :)) Damn good movie as well.

Truthfuly I like "Dawn Patrol" better than "The Blue Max". Granted DP is b&w, but I think it conveys the fatalistic feelings of the pilots better than BM. Both are excellent movies imho.
I haven't seen Flyboys yet so I can't comment on that.

Hey, I thought the Memphis Belle was a nice movie, I mean, at least they showed bombers exploding. The book is even worse.
