sucks.....
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:59:03 PM »
Went surfing the web to see what happened to my Grandpas PT boat after the war ended and I found out it was destroyed on 28 October 1945.

My grandpa was part of the crew on PT 188, he took care of the torpeados.

I also found this on some web page:

Quote

Hello Ken,
My Dad skippered PT 188. His name is William Harry Suttenfield. He also was at one time president of the PT Boat Assn. In 1962 he presented JFK with an award from the PT association which was a piece of crystal with a PT boat underway etched into it. It was to go on his desk.
My dad is still alive and his memories of those times are still pretty clear (just don’t ask him where he just put his glasses a minute earlier!)
I was trying to find out some info about where that piece of crystal is today. I live in Australia but he still lives in the states.

I tried emailing that person but the email did not work

well darn....... anyway, I thought I would share this with yall, even though its bad news  :)

There is a PT boat in Baytown Texas owned by an individual. Being wooden they require a lot of upkeep.

You might consider interviewing him with a tape recorder, and then having it transcribed. Not just about WWII, but about family history as well.

My Uncle did this with my great grandmother and, needless to say, knowledge that would've been lost with her death is now preserved.

Just some advice.  :)

I saw a documentary on the History Channel where most PT boats were set on fire. I think it was near the end of the war in the Pacific. Can't remember the reason

Didn't need them any more.  Strip them of what you need and destroy the rest.  They were blowing up surplus aircraft, B-17s, B-26s, P-38s, ect., in Europe at the end of the war.

And the phone # appears to be to the guy in Booyong's bussiness.  Hydroponics.
