F4U 1-C vs. 1-D (I was amazed by my results)
« on: October 18, 2000, 06:00:00 PM »
I fly the F4U1-C about 90% of the time.  I have seen recent discussions that the "D" version of the F4U is a more accurate Flight Model and that the "Chog" should fly like it so it won't be such a "dweeb" plane.

So I decided to try the "D" and see what the differences are.  Here is what I found:

On my very first flight I took 3/4 tank and a 150gal DT.  I got up to about only about 2,000 ft and engaged a 190.  The dogfight was pretty much on the deck and lasted for a good solid 6-7 minutes.

During the dogfight I was amazed at how well it handled at all speeds but most specifically at very low speeds.  I dropped flaps 2 notches had WEP enabled, DT still on, and was still able to "jink" all over the place, and make nice tight (slow) turns at about 120mph!

I ended up loosing the fight but immediately afterward the experienced 190 pilot typed in the radio buffer "nice flying discod!"

This was my very first flight and I was very impressed!  In fact in subsequent flights I found that it performed equally as well in high speed and altitude.  Not only that but it seemed easier to land than the "Chog"  (Note: I can land every plane with no problems except the Chog in which I crash about 35% of the time on landing!  Doh!)

The final and most important test to me was the firepower test.  To make a long story short....I still like the Chog guns better    The main difference is that in the "C" if I get any pings at all on an enemy fighter it will do some serious if not fatal damage, whereas on the "D" the pings did only minor damage.  But when I was able to line up the enemy right at my set convergence the short burst from the six 50cals on the "D" seemed just as leathal as the four 20mm on the "C".

In summary....I am all for making the "Chog" fly like the "Dhog" and keeping the 20mm cannons!  Buwhahahahahaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

But for sure I'm going to fly the "Dhog" more often than I have

Uhhhh.  Didn't think I was whining at all RAM    Maybe you just saw that it was a long post and figured I must be whining.  But actually I was giving praise to both planes.

I do have some good film though I'll post them here later..want to try and get some more footage first.
