Anyone do any Testing on the Yak-9U yet?

Has anyone done any testing on the Yak-9U yet?

I flew a 3 or 4 sorties yesterday and it seemed to me that acceleration was really 8-slow, but it may just be my perception since I have been out of town for most of the month and haven't flown much at all. But I did fly some P-51 sorties afterwards and didn't notice any appreciable difference between the two (should be a noticeable difference).

Just looking at the numbers though, the Yak should be one of the better accelerators in the game, in the same class as the G10 depending on fuel load. Anyone else have a feel for this, or done a numerical test?

Another thing is that the La5fn and the Yak-9U should have the exact same "Turn Times", 20 seconds (I assume Lavochin to the left, and Yakolev to the right given engine rotations). But it seemed to me that the Yakolev was much poorer in turning ability than the Lavochin (at least in "feel") and always on the edge of a stall in the lightest of turns.

And no I'm not whining   Since these are all perceptions of "feel" and I havent' done any solid testing.  Thats why I am asking all of you if you have.

I would never expect the Yak-9U, with about 1000fpm less climbrate than the Me 109G-10, to accelerate similarly... Btw: How much does the Yak weigh?

What exactly are the conditions for those "turn time" tests?

yak is a friggin rocket accelerator always at 300mph+


it eats everything but the spitfire for breakfast

get in any sort of knife fight and the spit will tear you a new ass.

I've escaped a lot from a full stall to flat out dragster contest vs 190s p51s spitfires and anything else for that matter.

only the g10 comes close in acceleration to the yak9u

Juzz, the Yak-9U produces 1,500 hp at sea level.

Empty weight = 5,537 lbs
Gross Weight = 7,063 lbs

That gives it a powerloading of 3.69 lbs/hp empty and 4.7 lbs/hp fully loaded at sea level.

It should be a dragster  

And like I said the perception my just be in my mind, thats why I wanted to see some hard numbers on it compared to other aircraft, rather than "feel".

Verm,
Are you comparing the La-5FN's left turn to the Yak-9U's right turn?  Turn differences in the Yaks were much more pronounced than they were for the Lavochkins, and I'm talking left, or right.  The Klimov rotates the prop counterclockwise, pilot's perspective.  The Shvetsov rotates opposite, like most aircraft engines.

BTW, the Yak-9 will eat the spit for lunch in a vert fight - 109 style.  Don't even need that much lateral seperation.

here is my questions:

A: has anyone managed to do a left hand snap roll yet? I cannot do one, I get an odd lopsided barrel roll.

b: Did the Yak really have this hellacious amount of control in vertical? and did it also have such a quick trim- out of trim for the rudder? I go into a vertical the rudder is out of trim within a 50 mph difference. Maybe the La-5 spoiled me in this- I could keep within trim 75 mph of speed setting, the yak just goes bang to one side then the other on me.
  PS I really don't want to lose the control...  it's not a whine just a gasp of disbelief and joy!

I think the yak should climb faster-its initial climb is listed as 4528ft/min.  It looks like the L5 can turn faster even to the right. I had to yoyo back on the L5 to get a shot. Yak runs low on ammo faster but the guns inflict enough damage for fighter kills at 300.  I had no luck catching Runstangs. It has a better power to weight ratio than 109's and should accelerate quickly.  Its empty weight is only 5100lbs.

You do not do a left bank snap roll with the klimov-engined yakovlev.  That's like trying to do a right bank snap roll in a La5 - you're fighting torque.  and, yes, both the yak-3 and yak-9u had astounding vertical performance.

Remember, when in a yakovlev you must think 'right' not 'left'.

I haven't tested it, but it flies great.  Accelerates and climbs like a monkey on crack.  I've run down Jugs, Hogs, and A-5's at medium altitudes.  Only flaw I've seen is a propensity to enter a flat spin.

  Flew the Yak this morning and got into a bit of a tiff with an La 5. Couldn't stay on his butt in a left hand turn long enough to to get a shot off, but easily ran away when he got close enough to put my butt in jeopardy. On reengagement, got into the same left turn chase with the same results. Finally had to run for home because of fuel.    He chased me but was smart enough to avoid the base ack.
   After reading the above, not once this morning did I think about the right hand torque issue (and I did notice it on take off). Lets see what happens next time.

I forgot to mention that the Lavochkins had very very similar turn results from either side, and so was not affected as badly as the Yakovlevs due to torque.  Yaks had noticably different turn rates wrt either side.
