USB chronic disconnect/reconnect
« on: March 09, 2009, 07:05:09 AM »
The USB gear I use keeps disconnecting and then reconnecting 2 seconds later.  Happens once or twice everytime I play, like once an hour.  I've gone into device manager and unchecked "let the computer shut off power to save energy", and it's still happening.  The controllers are on an external powered usb (Belkin F5U233).

Is there anything to help this?

I assume when you say an external powered USB hub, the hub actually has its own power supply?

Typically computers have two to four USB channels with multiple USB ports connected to each one.  Have you tried moving to another port of the computer?

It has its own power supply, yes.   I'll try switching usb sockets and see what happens over the next day or two.

It seems to be the same on all ports.  The frequency on two of them are more varied but overall it's the same number of disconnects.  I didnt keep track exactly, so I don't know how useful a sample this is.  The only sure thing is all of the ports chronically disconnect like this.

You might want to monitor your 110 power coming from your outlet, if it is varying enough it cause this issue, USB are a little more sensitive to voltage loss.

Moot,

I was having the same problem with my Saitek X52 Pro recently on an external powered HUB with a TrackIR and Pro peddles attached. I used a USB monitoring app to look at my bus and connecting devices. I discovered that my TrackIR was a USB-1 device while the saitek X52 and Pro peddals are USB-2 devices. I had been loosing the use of my X52 due to USB resets for some time in the game. When I moved the TrackIR onto a USB directly at the front of my PC, my X52 stopped resetting.

I do not know how much of your issue is similare to mine.   :)

It's spikes in the electrical network.  Listening to silence (this morning with headphones on before waking up fully), a fridge hooked up in the same room will make a small spark in the sound feed when it turns on/shuts off, and the USB disconnects coincide with it.

isn't your computer on a battery back up ups system that would keep the voltage to your computer clean and level?

or you can get a good power strip. The one I have has a line filter in it to help smooth out those spikes. It also has a filter for the phone line too. That the reason I got it, lightning hit a tree in the next yard and smoked my modem  :O

A comment regarding surge protectors/suppressors and DSL/Cable Internet lines (since The Fugitive brought line protection to the surface).

If you're using DSL or Cable Internet and you run the line through a surge protector not specifically designed for that type of Internet, you will lose signal strength and Internet speed. The typical surge protectors/suppressors will suppress the high frequency sound of DSL and Cable Internet signals thinking it's a spike in the line. This in turn degrades the quality of the signal and slows down the connection. This is just to let you guys know that while the surge protector/suppressor will protect your DSL/Cable Internet lines, it will degrade the signal strength and slow down your Internet speed.
