Been using Vista Ultimate myself (11 systems) since it was in Beta, never a problem.  Been using Vista Home Premium (over 350 builds) on my builds no problems.

For a system builder Vista most certainly is not a problem - the OS itself works just fine.

However for general users who have legacy hardware and software (old games, anyone?) Vista is an endless pit of trouble.

Not to mention the GUI changes which make the simpliest task a burden. Functions that were earlyer readily available are now either hidden or completely messed up.

Daddog, Vista is going to die an early death late this year (cannot happen fast enough if you ask me).  Windows 7 is looking like the operating system Microsoft should have shipped instead of Vista.  If you have an OEM copy of Windows XP, I would say stick with it until Windows 7 is out.

vista will allow you to get a little more out of your system memory wise as it supports more than 32-bit XP does.  But once you get over 4GB of RAM, you wont notice much of a performance boost unless you are doing crazy Photoshopping and/or CAD stuff most likely.  I just had TD do a build for me and decided to go the XP route due to the reasons Skuzzy mentioned as well.

I am not much of a techie so the less headaches the better and if it is going to depart in the near future (even later this year or the next) I see no reason to use it.

Certainly not to discount anyone on this board, I would wait for windows 7 and use xp if it's available. Just mho from what I have gathered from I.T. folks and these boards.

i have had many customers invoke the XP downgrade option on there vista. if you have one of the 2 qualifying vista's i would suggest doing it.

Building a system with Vista is no problem. It's living with a Vista system that's an needlessly annoying hassle.

Vista is destined to be the Windows ME of the 21st century. Webserver trends say 65% or 70% of users are using XP, with 15% or 20% using Vista. The Steam hardware survey puts the split at XP: 60% vs. Vista 26%, and that's as of March 31. These are real-world usage trends, and not sales data.

If you have access to an XP disc, stick with it. It will continue to get necessary security patches for some time. Windows 7 is going to push the remnants of Vista out of the marketplace, starting at the end of this year.

I've been running the beta for a few months now and it's a split experience. On the other hand it feels extremely snappy in daily use but on the other hand most of the older games my kids have, had problems running on it. I run the 64-bit version with latest available drivers.

AH2 works fine and so do many other games but some others (like MTX mototraxx demo) either just won't start at all or will get corrupt after a few minutes of play.

Could be a driver problem but that's all the same if the end result is an unworkable box. Mind you that it took over a year to get even half assed drivers for Vista64 and they're still not even near the quality XP32 drivers are.

XP, Vista, 7, it really doesn't matter, they are all produced by Microsoft and therefore predestined for failure and corruption.
