Ground vehicle controls
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:35:13 AM »
Can GV’S be remodeled realistically with neutral steer that allows them to turn with out having to move forward or backward? This is a standers feature on tanks since before ww2. There is supposed to be a gear marked NS which turns the tank in places with the motor running. In game play it would be nice if it were capable to be done in all positions that the driver is in. Allowing the tank to put his larger armored areas toward the con vehicle.   :salute

Do you have any specific references to support this?  People have said that only a few tanks in WWII had that ability, and a couple of those were prone to failure when it was used.

Actually I worded that wrong. All tanks in ww2 had 2 control levers. Each control lever gave power or gave braking to each individual side. Neutral steer was introduced when tanks were given steering wheel type controls. Either way all tanks in WW2 could pivot steer.

Do you have any references of any kind (web/print/etc) for this?

Try that in a WWII tank on soft ground and you have a tank missing a tread.

Yes in low gear a tank should be able to turn a fairly tight " U " without causing problems.
But it wouldn't be that tight except in low gear.

The 2 levers your talking about are clutch's, that combined with individual track brakes means that you can almost lock the inside track. So yes you could reduce power to the inside track. At the same time apply brake to the inside track. However doing so adds a lot of side pressure to the inside track. Seriously putting it at risk of popping a track pin leaving you parked there till repair crew could get to you.

So maybe model it to only work in low gear?  It certainly would improve things, and I'm pretty sure it's mostly wanted for stationary rotation.
