Were you moving very fast?

I've been more than lucky with this, twice.

Just exited the freeway and lost the nut holding the tie rod to the center link.  Left tire turned left, right tire turned right.  I stopped really fast.  Tied it back together with speaker wire to get home.

Second time, different car, the ball pulled out of the right tie rod.  I only noticed because I heard the tie rod dragging on the ground.  The car would still steer.  This time I parked it and walked home.  Changed the tie rod in a supermarket parking lot.

I'd rather be lucky than good.    :)

Actually, I had stopped at a light. When the light turned green I tried to steer right and nothing. Last week I took a 200 mile road trip. Thank goodness it didn't happen on the highway. All 4 tie rod ends need replaced.

I take it you don't have mandatory annual vehicle safety inspections down there?

They hook up to your computer, toot the horn, drive around the block.  If nothing falls off and everything works, you pass.

It's all about air pollution.

At least it didn't come off while out wheeling in the middle of nowhere either. Nothing like a jeep on the rocks and something like that happens.

I had a set of duals pass me once doing 60+ mph on the interstate...seconds later a semi truck passed me missing a set of duals on his passenger side drive axle...wonder if there was a connection....or lack of one there. :O

You should check your vehicles basic control points every 3 months for security, abnormal wear, and always keep them properly lubricated and your tires inflated to correct psi.. As a truck driver i have to do a pre-trip every day that consists of checking just these type of things. 30 minutes of my time each morning saves not only on an unexpected breakdown due to something as simple as inflating a tire but can also result in catching a problem that could possible take my life or some elses.

You got really lucky IMO, think i'd take the hint and check my ride a little more frequently. ;)
