New Video Card
« on: April 20, 2009, 09:39:49 AM »
My EVGA 8600 256 died a sudden death over the weekend.  I had to go to Best Buy to get LilDragn's X52 exchanged anyhow, so we decided to take a look at the VC's.  Ended up purchasing the BFG 9800GTX+ w/1 GIG RAM on sale for $152.00 + tax.  After checking Newegg and Tiger prices while in the store, found this price to be very good.  In fact, neither site offers this card, just the 512 MB version.  :rock

depending on how much ram you have 1 GIG video ram can sometimes hurt you. i would have got a 4850/70 1 gig for 150~ish. but should see a big improvement over your 8600

Dragon, how fast will your motherboard allow information to be pushed?  How fast will your CPU push info?

Yep, as I've read it the 1GB versions of all of the video cards are slightly hampered compared to their 512MB cousins. Take into account that it's based on benchmarks, though.

In most instances that I've checked on the core and memory clocks are slower in the 1Gb cards thereby reducing memory bandwidth vs their 512 counterparts.  This would give the performance edge to the 512 cards.

Regardless, this will be a major upgrade for you.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

And being that is what they had in stock, I guess I'll just have to suffer with it.  :P
