The GAU-8/A ammo was based on the equally powerful 30mm Oerlikon KCA revolver cannon fitted to the SAAB Viggen fighter (only with alloy instead of steel case).  Of course, the GAU-8/A fires at over three times the rate, but it is many, many times larger.....

A little-kown fact; the USA aquired and modified the KCA as a back-up in case the GAU-8/A failed.  It was known as the GAU-9, and the A-10 would have had two of them.

Hehe... I'll take GSh-301 - at only 46 kilos it's firing 400g 30mm rounds at 1,500 RPM  .

Alternatively, one can go for a heavier GSh-2-30 - two barrels, 3,000 RPM at a smidgen over 100 kilos.

And if one wants to go truly bananas - why not try the amazing GSh-6-23? It'll deliver trusty 23mm rounds at 10-12,000 RPM?   Comes in a MiG-31 packaging so can be rather cumbersome if you want to take it duck hunting or something .

Saw an A10 engage a truck hulk down at ft. Stewart in '82, 1 2 sec. firing pass resulted in 2 truck halves, a simply awesome display of firepower

It's the sound - the angry sort of thing, didn't sound like a cannon at all - that gets to me. A10 is a marvellous plane  .

(must have been 1/2 sec burst - 140 30mm rounds would evaporate the truck )

I remember taking a summer class at McClellan AFB in Sacramento years ago and I walked into a maintenance hangar and they were working on a A10 got to walk under it and they had all the panels off to service the the gun.  That thing was amazing.  They showed us all the parts and such then gave all of us a spent shell casing and sent us on our way.
