They are a little bit better where you're at than they are here in Killeen  (all of our family is there).  I think by the time we end up moving there (eventually) our boys will all be in High School or out at college. Out here not all of our kids are in public school ~ but if they're still in school when we move to your town I wouldn't mind having them in the public school there in town.

Many of the other outlying areas aren't as good as yours is though. :)

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.

I almost laugh out loud when I read some of these posts, and I mean that very literally.

After all the posts about how bad our education system is, from folks who do not live here, I must question the effectiveness of theirs, as well.
Especially the literacy part.
If you could, or perhaps would, bother to read all of the posts completely before coming to a conclusion, you may conclude that this girl was not jailed for truancy.  In fact, she was jailed for non-compliance to a court order, which in any state in the US, is considered a crime.  She had the choice to stay in school, or withdraw.  She chose to stay.  The stipulation was that if she chose to stay, she was required to abide by a court order.  She chose to disobey the court order.  She was jailed for her non-compliance.  There is absolutely nothing "police state" or "socialist" about that.  In fact, it is very black and white.

On a lighter note, I can hardly consider a weekend in the tank "prison" or "jail"

This seems completely ridiculous.  But it's not my state, and not my problem.

(Image removed from quote.)

Of the entire World's prison population of about 9 million, 2 million are in US prisons.

Now we know why. Naughty schoolgirls get sent to jail.  :lol

Question. Where would you feel safer  walking the streets.
The USA? or Nigeria?

Thats the First logical explanation of this issue I've seen yet.
and maybe the only intelligent argument made in this thread that is pro jail for this girl.

No, I think it is you that missed the point. What some people here find ridiculous is that the court was involved in this in the first place. What does skipping school has to do with the law authorities? In most countries, this is a matter between the school and the parents. In very extreme cases and when the kid is a minor, the parents may be in trouble for not complying with education laws - not the child.

It does happen from time to time that a stupid law is passed (usually by a stupid politician, for an even stupider reason). In such cases, the police and mostly judges apply some common sense and either do not enforce it, or dismiss it with a minimal procedure to save the system's time money and effort for the real criminals. This is why you employ human judges and police officers instead of Judge
Dread and Robocop.

What you had here is a problematic law, for a minor issue, that was needlessly brought before a judge, that made a ruling that was destined to be broken, that ended with a girl spending time in whatever detaining facility you want to call this. She was not taken care of - she was "processed" by the system.  Some things simply should not get to court at all - skipping school is one.

How is it you feel confident that you have all the facts in this case?  Especially since the U.S. media has such a good record of accurately and dispassionately reporting these types of stories.  Again, while technically she was jailed for truancy, in reality, she was really jailed for defying a court order.  Those same types of court orders are the ones that enforce restraining orders, gag orders, alimony and child support payments, etc.  If the judge did not find her in violation and punish her, he would be in jeopardy of discrediting himself and his peers as judicial authorities.  Its really that simple, without some sort of societal watershed to frame an argument in.
