UPDATE: I just found out about the, "Sponge" tool in Photoshop. It works wonders! I just made some of my smoothest grayscales ever with that tool.

Yes.

If you paint everything black from the beginning then use the sponge at 20% flow it can really work wonders. If you need a certain area brighter than the sponge can generate, paint it white and use the sponge to make a smooth transition between the darker and brighter colors.
