My 2c - I don't care about the original star trek films. I have never been motivated to watch any. Yet i cannot wait to see this new one after seeing the preview clips, so he must be doing something right to draw in a new audience. The effects look amazing, i don't think the old enterprise would cut it with a modern audience.
