anybody familiar with transfer cases please let me know. Ive got one that is kind of a mind boggler. For some reason the borg-warner
quadra-trac in my jeep wagoneer will only put power to the rear wheels if I have it in four-wheel drive, but if i put it in two wheel drive, it makes an odd noise and I just sit there. Its the vacuum operated version so it's not linkage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Whoa. Is this a Daily Driver or a Trail Rig? Because QT was only available in SJ's from 73-79 (No offense, but if your SJ is 1980 or newer, then you have an NP207). Milemarker does make a conversion kit allowing for better "2wd" driving. But you lose a little of the Freeway speed range, nut not enough to hurt you.
Do you have the 1305 or the 1339?
It sounds like the all to common Shifting mechanism has gone on it. The one good thing about a QT case, is that you rarely have to pull it out, to make the "common repairs".
You really need to watch out for spring-loaded detent balls that can sail through the air. When reinstalling, reinsert the spring and when the ball is about to be put back. A small screwdriver can be used to depress the ball and the spring as the rod is slid over to retain them. It's a good idea to have a small magnet handy in case you drop the ball into the shift-fork cavity.
Also, if you pull the cover and see the shifting mechanism is fine, look at the sun gear on the low range reduction unit. This is also a common problem, as is the stretched chain.
