Japanee B17 ? ;)
« on: January 18, 2000, 06:24:00 AM »
I meant "Japanese", of course...

Hello,
My 2 Cents here...

Yesterday (my 1st flight Online with AH) I flew the B17 (Desperately on my own) and got shot down ba ONE burst from a P51, that ripped my wing off...

Am I wrong when i expect that the "Super Forteress" would be a little tougher than that ? is it a Japanese "Rice paper" brand of the Buff, or Was I simply totaly out of luck ?

I remember reading somewhere that the B17 was capable of sustaining a HUGE ammount of damage...One burst of .50 is not what I call a Huge ammount of dammage...

Please, answer before you plonk

"Huge amounts" is a relative term.

How much would a contemporary bomber take from sustained .50 fire?

How close did you let him get?

Was he able to concentrate on a wing root?

Yes, history says the B17 could take immense damage. But remember, Memphis Belle was the first B17 and crew to survive 25 missions, and that was what year?

Mhhh, indeed, he got in pretty close, as I was fiddling with the Gunner positions (Front or top, I couldn't choose...)

He actualy broke my Left wingtip, right fter tha last Engine...I started spinning down...

I'll try this on th other side tonight and I WILL take off in that F4U now !!!

BTW, Taking off needs some Trim, right ? Do I need Aileron Trim or the other ?

Oh, well, I'll just have to try it I guess

Does anyone have "anti-sleeping" pills to share ?

Saint,

Remember, that single "burst" he hit you with may have been a REALLY long one on his FE, or even a few short ones close together.  Because of lag issues, you can't be sure on your end what actually happened.  Even so, a buff is a big target, and we have some great gunners in this game.  A sustainded 2 second burst into a wingtip from 6x.50 caliber would blast a wing into powder.  We are not talking about a stray round or two here...

As for your question about taking off, I dont use any trim adjustments.  Although it may help, I personally just ease the power on smoothly and use lots of rudder to launch my F4U.  I don't generally trim until airborn and clean, at which point I engage Auto Speed for my climbout.
