Cool find in an old forgotten box
« on: May 22, 2009, 05:47:16 AM »
I went through some old boxes and stuff after my mom and found an envelope with some coins. Most are older norwegian and danish coins of no real value.

One of the more special coins i found was a 1889 silver dollar. It not in mint condition, but very very nice. The fun part is that it has the CC under the eagle and after a few mins of research i found that this means "CARSON CITY". Nothing special i thought until i searched ebay  :O

Think ill hold on to this one  :)

Have anyone else done nice finds like this?

A real treasure would be to find old shares in coca cola from around 1892 :D but this one was fun too  :)

Yesterday I found an old baseball card from the 80's in a book "Sun Tzu Art of War" that I haven't read in awhile.  On a side note the card is of no one important...damnit.  Still find the book interesting though.

Yeah thats a nice grab. I dont know much about collectable coins but I do know theres a mint in Carson City and that its an old one. There was a lot of silver mining going on back then. And yes, I'd say 1889 still qualifys as the wild west days. Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank in 1889.

Pass it on to your kids. Even better come to America some time and see the West. Some of these famous old western towns are real fun tourist attractions. I hunt some spots in Montana where your still likely to see a horse tied up in town.

My CO was pulling out the stone "mounting step" in front of his house (a stone pedestal used to mount a horse without having to step into the stirrup and swing your leg over) for restoration and found an 18th Century spur buried next to it.

The irony is that he's the CO of a RevWar Continental Dragoon unit, and found a RevWar era horsemans spur on his property. :)

I collected baseball cards when I was young.  At a card shop a guy convinced me (to convince my mom) to buy a pack of basketball cards for 50 cents.  I was 10 yrs old.  I bought 1 pack of Fleer 86-87 basketball cards.  It had a Larry bird and a Patrick Ewing in it.  I knew Larry Bird and Ewing were greatness, but I didn't have much use for them so I left them sitting out somewhere.  I didn't really follow the NBA other than Celts back then as my dad was a fan.

In the mid 90's my dad was cleaning out his desk in the computer room and he ran across the basketball cards.  He came in and handed me the loot.

Yup, Michael Jordan rookie card.

It isn't mint condition, and the print is not centered perfectly.  Still, It was a great find.

Nice find Nils!

When my grandfather passed away, I was going through some of his old books on gardening.  Stuck in the pages was Carl Yastrzemski's rookie card.  Dad got the card.  But I know where he keeps it. :D

I've collected baseball cards and baseball memorabilia for a long time.

I've some Goudy Big League Chewing Gum cards from the 30s.

Cards from the 50s include Feller, Williams, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron reverse Negative 1957, Rocky Colavitos first topps card 1957 plus many more from the 50s.
Complete sets from 71 and 74 and all sets from 1980 to 1991 when card collecting became a joke. 1952 or 53 Color bowman of Willie Mays.
Have more from the 50s....have to look some day  :D

Have Upper Decks first factory set from 1989 also.  Various Wax Boxes unopened from the 80s' and 90 and 91.

Autographed Baseballs, DiMaggio, Mantle, Aaron, Bob Feller and Mel Harder I got on the opening game in Jacobs field.
Ernie Banks, and the prize 1957 Braves Team autographed world series baseball with players like Aaron, Mathews, Spahn etc.
I've got ten to 15 more.....I can't recollect who they are but all were stars.

1995 Cleveland Indians World Series Game Hat autographed in silver Sharpie (HOF'ers Winfield and Murray on it)
Thome, Vizquel, Lofton, Albert Belle etc.  I have it displayed in a football case.  Vizquel and Thome more then likely future HOF'ers.

Feller and Harder autographed American League baseballs that had the Jacobs Field Logo on it for the first game in that Stadium.
They were only issued for the first game and never used again.

I've lots of sports Memorabilia..."Junk"

Someday I just might catelogue the collection and determine what it is worth.

Have many programs also.  1948 Cleveland Indians world series program that someone kept score in (had it framed)
First game in Jacobs Field....first game in new browns stadium and tickets out the ying yang (not stubs)
from various sporting events. (One a Nolan Ryan no hitter)

Yep....lots of Junk  :aok

Not to hijack by any means, but my shooting buddy's grandpa passed away a few years back. He willed to his wife 2 silver Colt 1911's. By "silver" I mean actual 100% silver. Could plunk those badboys down for just about anything nowadays I'd imagine.

My dad had a couple of Mikey Mantle and Babe Ruth cards (not sure if rookies).  But he said they would put them in the spokes of their bikes when they rode. My grandmother threw all his cards away when he went to college in the 60s. He probably coulda retired with money to burn with those cards.
