Speed or four 20's does a fighter ace make ...
« on: February 03, 2000, 07:51:00 AM »
I did a check on the top 5 pilots with the best Kill-to-Death ratios just now, and here were my results:
  • 53% of their kills were while in an aircraft with four 20mm cannons.
  • The single aircraft with the most kills among the group was the P-51D with 36% of the total kills.

My point?  Well, I wanted to see what an unnumbered list looks like...  and, of course, I screw it up, needing to edit this post

I'm not telling.
What always bothers me is that folks seem to want late war, then they marvel at the fact that the fastest, most heavily armed (and armored) planes win.
Fancy that, the cannon hog now rules the skies.

I wonder how 262 would do in this arena....hmm, one can never know

But it surely is one the most beautiful but also meanest looking planes ever built

Can anyone give me a comparison between the F4U-1C, 190A-8 and the 109G-6 (30mm / 2x 20mm Gondola).  As they are modeled in AH?

F4U-1C:

Fast, maneuvers well at speed, devastating punch. Pretty good zoom, rolls fast. Takes a good beating to knock one down. Slow climb and acceleration the worst downfalls.

109G-6:

Fast, great climber and accelerator. Basic guns a little on the weak side, but gondolas improve punch markedly (at the cost of maneuverability and climb). Handles well at mid to low speed, but at high speed it gets very heavy at the controls.

190A-8:

Rolls very nicely, great intial turn rate, great firepower. Downside is that after you slow down you are in trouble, even the Hawg will turn inside you. Top speed is slightly mismodeled, so you won't run very far either. Be smooth on the controls and keep the speed up and it's a lot of fun, but Hawgs can ruin your day in a hurry.

Here are a couple of other observations:

Also poor at low speed turns and a tendancy to drop a wing while turning at a high bank angle.  F4's are more vulnerable to low six attacks due to a degraded view to the back with all that armor plate.

With use of flaps and at low fuel, Hog is a surprise package in TnB. By combining this with superior rudder authority, it can give even a dedicated turner a hard time.

Remember, all it needs is a snapshot.

I think that's why they say "Speed is life"

..and if you live long enough in the AH arena, you'll eventually find someone to pounce with those hammering 20's or .50's...
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!
