I'm not familiar enough with Networking to tell you the difference. I just know it has to do with data transfer across networks. Is the start-end range time or ports?

since im not experienced with advanced routing, i decided to take my router out of the equation. i ran a pingplot, only difference is i have 1 less hub(bc i removed router) and now 3,4,5,6 hubs are 100% packet loss(was 4,5,6,7). that # 3 hub Denholm mentioned moved to #2.

what is the problem with that hub denholm? it has the best ping score, please understand im only trying to pick your brain.

i also talked to my ISP, had to get rid of router for them to ping my modem and they said it has 0 packet loss. they also told me each of those addresses arent theirs, they are HTC's.

i shouldnt have to open any ports if im directly connected to my cable modem right?

here is a pingplot from my backup computer, same connection.

The cable/DSL modem could have a firewall all of its own. If it does try forwarding the ports from there. Yes, your ISP doesn't own the HTC servers, but they are in the same network. It's all AT&T and they should take routing problems within their own network seriously. I really have no idea why those four hops are causing you so much trouble. That's something AT&T has to diagnose and repair.

got off the phone with cablevision(my cable provider), guy on the phone said its HTC's fault, yet when i did a ping on download.com, yahoo.com, and aol.com, the same problems. at that point he was dumbfounded on the situation, but he was able to confirm that my cable modem model does not have a built in firewall. if i was to get a free modem from them, it would most likely be the one i bought from bestbuy(now they do it!!). here is a screenshot of pingplot on www.aol.com

at this point, i am on my backup computer, directly connected to my cable modem. firewall is disabled.

im going to cablevision tomorrow to get a fresh cable modem.
