What was it George Carlin once said about electricity (other than it being organized lightning)? If you want to screw up today's world, just take it away.

And another one: "When Thomas Edison worked late into the night on the electric light, he had to do it by gas lamp or candle. I'm sure it made the work seem that much more urgent."

I'd always thought you guys in Dallas would get those with some frequency.   I know up here in Tulsa we're lousy with them this time of year.  Some weeks in spring or early summer we might have 3 in a week like that, and maybe one tornado warning a week also, not to mention the hail and high winds.  Even the weather people on the news quit getting all panicy about them after a while.

I always assumed that Dallas had really similar weather and had just adjusted to the severe thunderstorm like we have.  I never spent any amount of real time there, so I never really knew for sure.  It has just always been my assumption that Dallas gets very similar weather to us.  I figured you guys would be used to it by now.

Have I been wrong in my assumption all these years?

We get thunderstorms frequently.  We had a few yesterday as well but the one the other day wasn't a typical one even though on the radar map it doesn't look very different from a run of the mill summer storm.  This one had some really freakish winds.  Everybody in my neighborhood had their roofs totaled by golf ball size hail a couple months back and that storm was nothing compared to this one.  Over 500,000 electrical customers lost power.  We finally just got power back to the office early this morning but 120,000 electrical customers are still without power.  This UPS truck pulled over during the storm about a mile from our office and was blown over.

Yeah, that's some good stuff there!  We had a 70 mph wind storm come through today, but it only lasted a couple of hours, luckily there was no hail in the town proper.  I don't much fear tornados but that hail is something else entirely.

Summer is the worst time to be without power, I feel for you there.

I'd still much rather live in a place with a severe thunderstorm season than a place with a wildfire season.
