Aircraft Trivia....answer em if you can
« on: January 10, 2001, 09:48:00 AM »
ANSWERS TO TRIVIA QUESTIONS POSTED EARLIER:  Chisel gets the golden valve award (LOL, not really) for getting the most correct.

1.  Which is the #1 Cylinder on an R-2800 twin row wasp?  ANSWER:  Rear Row, Top (12 o'clock)

2. Which side of the prop is the face?  ANSWER:  The flat side, or the side facing the pilot.

3.  What's the firing order of the R-2800? ANSWER: 1-12-5-16-9-2-13-6-17-10-3-14-7-18-11-4-15-8  (+11,-7)

4.  Which production fighter aircraft in WWII used the R-3350 for it's powerplant? ANSWER:  There was no "production" fighter in WWII that used the R-3350...a few experimental designs did use it but the closest to actual production was the A1 Skyraider.

5.  What's the difference between low and high tension ingnition systems?
ANSWER:  Low tension system sends low voltage out from the magneto which is transformed to high voltage out at the cylinder.  High tension system sends high voltage right from magneto to the cylinders. Low tension used for high alt flight to eliminate flashover (misfiring) so if you alt monkeys start having engine trouble at 35k+ it's because those Corsairs, Hellcats, Jugs and B26's all used high tension systems

6.  How many spark plugs are installed in an R-2800 engine?  ANSWER:  2 per cylinder or 36 total.

7.  What does  the acronym ADI [as applied to aircraft engines] stand for?  ANSWER:  Anti-Detonant-Injection also known at WEP comprised of alcohol and water.

8.  At what engine speed is the lowest manifold pressure achieved?  ANSWER:  Idle

9.  How many magetos are installed on an R-2800?  ANSWER:  2 magnetos in one housing (dual magneto)

10.  What does the term 23E50 mean with respect to propellors?  ANSWER:  I haven't been able to confirm this yet but recalling my A & P schooling the term stands as follows:  2= right hand rotation, 3= 3 blades E= mod status, 50= SAE 50 size spline prop shaft. (FYI R-2800 uses a 60 spline prop shaft.)

11.  How many revolutions of the crankshaft does it take to fire all the cylinders of an R-2800 (18 cylinders)?  ANSWER: 2 revolutions of the crank to fire all cylinders. (true with ANY 4 stroke engine whether lawn mover, car or plane)

4. Which production fighter aircraft in WWII used the R-3350 for it's powerplant?

I believe the answer to #4 is the F2G Super Corsair. A very small production run, but a production run never the less.

What the hell I'll make a guess on these.

5. I got several guesses here
1st. 6 vs 12 volt
2nd. 12 vs 24 volt

6. 2/cyl.

9. 2

11. 4.5

I'll add another.

How many valves per cylinder. 3? (2 intake and 1 exhaust)

You better post the answers. That was a lot of brain strain for a one time diesel mechanic.

Good questions!!

Without looking anything up.

#7. The answer is "Attitude Directional Indicator". Used to be an Avionics tech in Air Force.

#4. FR-1 Ryan fireball. The P-47J used the R-3350 also I think. I believe the R-3350 is a Wright Cyclone engine not a P&W. The other bird that was designed for a Wright Cyclone was the Hellcat but not in production.

#8. I believe the lowest manifold pressure an engine runs at would be one of three things.
Start, cruise, V-max. I'll guess V-max because the pressure should be the highest at the start of compression then should be the lowest and the highest flow.

#11. The Radial engine is a 4 stroke engine so I believe it should be 5 full revolutions to complete one firing cycle.

Those are my final answers without looking anything up. Don't want to cheat you know...

ADI is indeed Attitude Directional Indicator, and I forgot that little fact.  Unfortunately, I was referring to aircraft engines....LOL, I edited my original post to make it a bit more specific

I'll add another question. What's the gear reduction ratio between the crank shaft and propeller hub?

Are you referring to the R-2800? If so then it's 20:9 crank : prop.

1. rear row center top

2. flat side

3. 1-12-5-16-9-2-13-6-17-10-3-14-7-18-11-4-15-8
<edit> just so you dont think Im cheating, The magic numbers are +11, -7

4.---------

5. low tension mag: primary coil for each plug mag sends low voltage pulse to coil.

high tension: one p-coil in mag sends high voltage pulse to all the spark plugs.

6. 36

7. Anti detonant injection.

8. idle or low idle if ya wanna get technical

9. 2

10.-----

11. 2

Reduction ratios of .4, .5, .5265 :1
