Sleepers
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:26:20 AM »
You know the type.  The ones that pull up softly next to you, the requisite Mcfly type at the wheel, gaze stoically fixed ahead, I mean, come on like he can’t see your candy apple, and feel the rumble of those hookers.  :huh  You lean in close to your hunny, as you switch off the LedZep,  :rock and with a smug grin and a little pinch, whisper, “Watch this.“  :t

The Hurst feels like an ole flannel shirt, as you slide it back and prepare to dump the converter, launching down the boulevard and flirtin with disaster.  You're not worried about this guy.  :lol Oh no, your mom had the same car, Hah! and with a final check six for five-oh, you settle in for the green.

The light changes.  You mash the pedal, and amidst the blinding smoke screen, rich with the stench of roasting Good~years, you catch the familiar flash of the opponents headlamp in your side view, as another victory unfolds in usual fashion…

But wait, that low rumble is getting louder…  :uhoh

Could it be?  :O

No….  :furious

Sweat beads forming on your brow you watch in disbelief as Mcfly roars by, his gaze now fully fixed on you, a slight mocking upturn at the corners of his mouth.  With nothing but fading tailights ahead, you let off, the twin thrush’s barking loudly in protest.

Disgraced you pull into the malt shop.  Shutting the beast down you stare at your lap, wondering how the unthinkable just happened.  You feel a small hand take your chin, and reluctantly look at your girl.  You are about to offer one of the many standard excuses, but she just giggles and plants a big one right on your lips anyway.

Win or lose, she don’t care…She just loves your loud exhaust, craigers, and that…that…you know….that thingy sticking out of the hood.   ;)

Over the years my brother and I have had many, many muscle cars, stock cars, dragsters, etc,…etc…  A family hobby, I guess you would say.

Here’ the current one.

71 Torino GT Convertible.  351 Cleveland 4bbl.  duels, posi.  All original rust free car.  A real sleeper. About 25 years ago, the second owner painted this car red.  We are currently in the process of returning it to it's original Ford gray/green over black.

1 of 14 built in that color code!

No not me Nils.  I have had too many bad wrecks and close ones.  A few years back I had a real bad crash and burn on the dirt track.  Upside down against the wall, flames, no way out...sucked.

I'll give my brother some sweat and time with this one, but my road warrior days are over.  My jeep sees to that.  The late 60's and early 70's were an awesome time for american cars, and one we won't ever see again, it looks like.  It's cool to preserve a part of that time, and summer time cruises with the top down around the lake...well...

Hah...they were all fun.

My brother and I were the founders of "Saratoga Super Fords" car club, up here in upstate.  Mostly ponies. some torino's and t-birds.  We had a blast with those cars I tell ya.  I wish I still had alot of them.  Guys in the back seat of the 69 said they could feel the car twisting from the power  Stock 428 with the drag pack 4 speed.  I also had a regular 351 71 fastback, and a identical 72 as well, but listing them all on a forum post could be a bit much for some to digest.

If you are interested in seeing them Cap, I can post some pics, but will have to snap digital of old film pics for ya, as I am not getting any younger, and we are talking a few years back.  The 67 GT FB was my first car, 16 years old.  I bought it when I was 14 with paper route money and my dad, bro and I restored it frame up.  Kinda got me hooked.  So any way, if you want Ill charge the camera dig up some memories and post the pics, but I have to go pick up my son from school so it won't be till this afternoon.
